## ROSOMOY GUPTO BANGLA CHOTI Gul Muhammad Tarafdar, the Pathan protagonist of Mulk Raj Anand's novel The Bachelor of Arts, was a thirty-five-year-old bachelor and lived in a house that was always full of visitors. As an avid writer and reader, he was well versed in all things cultural and literary. His "intellectualism" led him to despise this world full of "mice" — meaning those who ran around for pleasure — but as luck would have it, all his desires came true when he fell in love with the beautiful Zia Munni. He eventually managed to marry her. They had one son, Bhola. Growing up, he was an adventurous child always up to mischief, which his father adored because it meant that he was learning things. To make certain that Bhola did not take after his mother's side, he insisted that his son wear what came out of the chest by way of dresses and tunics were "pukka" (right) designs indicating Islamic influence. They never bought him anything from a shop as they believed everything available at home befits a Pathan boy. He married Neelam, the daughter of Tulsidas Bhattacharya, in a "smart match". Bhola's in-laws were all his well-wishers in the beginning; they lived in three contiguous houses. After Bhola got his degree in Economics and subsequently became employed, he started to dress like an "Englishman", i.e., wore suits. His father was ecstatic about this and had no complaints as long as Bhola remained on good terms with his mother and sister-in-law (Nilu). On the other hand, Neelam's father had his reservations about Bhola for he was an "Angrez" (Englishman) educated in "Angrezi" (English) college. He wanted his daughter to marry a boy who could make a mark in society through his learning, not some "wastrel" who would spend all day reading books, writing articles for different magazines, and attend conferences only to deliver useless speeches. However, Tulsi's negative attitude towards Bhola changed after he found that his son-in-law was employed with the Government of India. This meant great things for Neelam because now her status would be elevated. At the age of thirty-four, Bhola was offered a place at a university in London to do his Higher Studies. Neelam was excited about this and insisted they go very quickly as their house would not be complete without them. However, upon reaching there, she felt that Bhola's beard had turned white and his moustache had turned grey as he looked the same as he did all those years ago. The British professor at the university sent Bhola out on leave for some months so that he could get used to the campus and learn about the local customs and traditions before starting work there.
